The average Brit will spend more than £65,000 over their lifetime – looking after their basic health.

A poll of 2,000 adults found Brits spend an average of £1,091.26 each year on gym memberships, vitamins and supplements, prescriptions, exercise classes and healthy foods.

And over the course of a 60.3 year average adult lifespan, that adds up to a staggering £65,802.98

The average Brit spends an average of £113.46 each year on gym memberships, another £123.60   on vitamins and supplements, and an extra £66 on protein powders.

They’ll also spend £28.98 a year on new exercise gear, clothing and equipment to help with their workouts.

And those who use alternative medicines and therapies will spend £31.98 a year on the treatments.

The research was conducted by 4Homeopathy, in support of Homeopathy Awareness Week (10-16th April).

A spokesperson for 4Homeopathy said: “Looking after your health is one of the most important things you can do.

“There are so many ways you can dedicate funds to improve your health and wellbeing, and we are encouraged by the results of the study which indicate many Brits would be open to alternative therapies in the future.

“We know that many people – with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle being the latest high-profile examples - are already enjoying or exploring the positive health benefits of complementary and alternative medicines.”

A third of adults would consider using complementary or homeopathic alternatives for an ailment in the future, and one in six are already using alternative methods to help with their illness.

The survey, conducted by OnePoll.com, also explored attitudes to healthcare and wellness.

Seven in 10 Brits think about the state of their health on a regular basis, with the average adult visiting the doctor three times a year.

Men are more likely to spend money on vitamins, protein powders and exercise supplements to stay healthy, while women prioritise their spend on healthy foods.

And one in 10 have put off visiting their doctor in case it resulted in a costly diagnosis they would struggle to afford.

However, 12 per cent are already currently suffering with a medical condition that causes them significant expense to treat.

But only 14 per cent of adults surveyed in the study currently have a savings account reserved specifically in case of emergency.

Londoners are most likely to fret about the state of their health, while those living in the North West are the most relaxed about their physical wellbeing.

Residents of Oxford are most likely to rate their general health as excellent, while those living in Cambridge are most likely to rate their health poorly.

4Homeopathy’s spokesperson added: “A health issue can feel daunting, putting strain on physical, psychological and financial elements.

“This Homeopathy Awareness Week we would encourage Brits to explore other alternative avenues of healthcare especially if traditional routes are causing anxiety or are proving ineffective”.

Green is the new black - Arlene Phillips attends NTAs in a 'living' dress

Strictly Come Dancing star Arlene Phillips walked the red carpet last night at the National Television Awards wearing a “living” dress decorated with real flowers that are all used for homeopathic remedies, including Clematis, Hydrangea and others.

Arlene is lending her support to a campaign launched by eleven homeopathic charities and associations, including the British Homeopathic Association (BHA) and the Homeopathy Action Trust (HAT). The campaign aims to raise awareness of homeopathy and the organisations’, useful and informative website, www.findahomeopath.org.

The dress was the inspiration of award-winning florist (five consecutive RHS Gold Medals and four Best in Show awards from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show) Joseph Massie. Months of work have gone into designing and making the dress, with Massie and his team spending over 100 hours painstakingly sowing each petal onto the fabric.

Arlene uses homeopathy to aid digestion and to help keep her stomach healthy. She commented, “I’m passionate about being 100% naturally healthy. I was first introduced to homeopathy six years or so ago. After visiting a homeopath I noticed huge differences and have never looked back.”

The BHA and HAT are both national charities that have come together for this campaign to highlight the need for greater integration of homeopathy into everyday healthcare, and to raise public awareness.  For more information visit www.findahomeopath.org.

BHA Chief Executive, Cristal Sumner, said: “We are so pleased to have such a strong, beautiful woman endorsing homeopathy and talking about her experience of using homeopathy. It mirrors what I regularly hear every day -from those who use homeopathy and see a homeopath.

She added: “Hopefully our campaign will encourage others to join Arlene and themillions of people across the globe who have made homeopathy an indispensable part of their approach to healthcare.

Holistic help for the party season

With the party season just about to begin (if it hasn't already!) it seemed a good time to share some self help tips for the season. For long standing or chronic ailments, it’s important to see a practitioner, but there are several homeopathic remedies which might help with minor symptoms of over indulgence over the festive period:

Nux Vomica - 'the hangover' remedy

Nux vomica: this is known as “the hangover” remedy but can also be used for the general symptoms of over-indulgence. Symptoms include heartburn, indigestion, and nausea, a headache, sensitivity to noise and light, and irritability. Particularly suits people who tend to burn the candle at both ends, who keep going with coffee and feel the cold.

Arsenicum: this remedy comes into play when the symptoms are like that of food poisoning, with vomiting and diarrhoea, loss of colour in the face and anxiety. Could also be used when the diarrhoea is anxiety-induced, worse at night with burning in the stomach and a desire to sip water. It suits restless people who are fearful worriers, need to plan and feel the cold.

Sulphur: symptoms include offensive diarrhoea which drives the patient from bed in the morning, excessive sweating, and burning feet. Suits stubborn people who need praise, worry about their health, can be peevish with lots of big ideas they find difficult to actualise. They crave sugar and spicy food.

Lycopodium: symptoms include bloating with wind, a huge appetite, and waking as if from a fright. There is heartburn with sour burping. Suits fearful people lacking in confidence who don’t like undertaking new news. But can be bragging and assertive at home.

Arnica: this is a great remedy to help with bruising and that “battered” feeling you get after last-minute Christmas shopping or bargain hunting in the January sales.

Wishing you a sparkling season of goodwill,

With very best wishes from us all at Find a Homeopath!

Symptoms and their use in returning to health

health hippocratesOne thing that delights me about homeopathy is how so much of it makes sense. From the time of Hippocrates, it was recognised that symptoms often have something worthwhile to express to us and as homeopaths (along with other health professionals), we take this into account daily.

If you've a car and there's a warning light on, there's at least two ways to fix this situation. One would be to remove the warning light bulb. No longer a warning light showing = car fixed? Maybe not quite. A homeopath would want to look at why the warning light was visible. What was going on when it started showing? Any other symptoms there? What was the root of the problem, the cause of the light showing initially? Then, ideally, these, as well as other symptoms, would be addressed, leading to the light no longer being needed as a warning.

A simple enough analogy perhaps and frequently this often a part of what we do as homeopaths. We may look to the causation of the problem that is being expressed and attempt to help it without suppression of symptoms. As the person gets better the symptoms that had been upsetting them may well fade. There may also be learning from particular symptoms we can do, and in consultation with a homeopath this can help us to move to a place of better health and greater awareness of ourselves.

On the Find a Homeopath home page you can search for a homeopath nearby to you by postcode (or use the advanced search feature to search by town) in the UK. Alternatively if you've experienced homeopathy working for you and would like to share your account then have your say here.
